Nighthawks PeeWee AA Win International Silver Stick Regionals
The Northumberland Nighthawks Railside
PeeWee AA team traveled to Pembroke this past weekend to compete in the International Silver
Stick Regional tournament.
The weekend started with a successful round robin that included a 7-2 victory over Kingston, a 3-1 win over the Upper Ottawa Valley Aces and a 2-2 tie against the Ottawa Sting. Owen Beck and Noah Richard lead the scoring for the Nighthawks during round robin play.
In the semi-finals, the Nighthawks faced the Upper Ottawa Valley Aces and prevailed 4-1. The win was highlighted by Brayden Burge’s goaltending and goals by Owen Beck, Conor Gilligan, Clayton Clark and Noah Richard.
The semi-final win setup a snowy Sunday night finals against the Ottawa Sting, which turned out to be a game that the players, parents and coaches won’t soon forget. After the teams traded goals in the first period, the game remained tied 1-1 at the end of regulation play. The Nighthawks’ first period goal was scored by Rhett Cleverdon.
Overtime consisted of 10 minute, 3 on 3 periods. In the first overtime period, the teams traded glorious scoring chances, but both goaltenders held their ground and the game remained tied at the end of the first overtime period. The Nighthawks’ Oscar Brown made 3 breakaway saves in the first overtime period to keep the game tied. Finally, halfway through the second overtime period, the Nighthawks captured victory on a goal off the stick of Connor Patrick who parked himself in front of the net and hammered home the winning goal after receiving a goal mouth pass from Hayden Howe.
With the tournament win, the Nighthawks will travel to Port Huron, Michigan to compete in the International Silver Stick Finals at the end of January. Congratulations to the entire team on a fantastic tournament win!
