NMHA Select Hockey Program
Our select hockey program is an opportunity for players registered in NMHA's House League to play at a more competitive level. It is designed to show players and families what a rep hockey program is, without the bigger commitment. Teams will play in Hockey Canada sanctioned exhibition games and tournaments. The NMHA have one select team per age group. We have a U9, U11, U13, U15 and a U18 team. These teams are a combined age group, a minor/major split.
Select ice times are in addition to regular House League games. House League participation takes seniority over Select activities. Players are permitted to participate in both House League and Select activities in the same day. If a house league game is scheduled for the same time as select game, the player must play in the house league game. It is important to know, Select hockey is in addition to House League, not a replacement.
Select Coaches
All head coaches are applicants that have been approved by NMHA council and must receive a majority vote to be approved. All staff of the select team must be in good standing with the NMHA and must meet all team official qualification requirements of the OMHA. This includes Head Coach, Assistant Coaches and Trainers. Managers must be capable of coordinating the schedule, managing team finances, fundraising activities (if applicable) and take an overall leadership behind the scenes.
Player Selection
Coaches appointed to the team will evaluate players as well as independent evaluators during interest tryouts and House League games. Teams may roster a maximum of 19 players with the exception of U18 which may register 25 players. Select teams are not required to declare a goalie on its roster with the understanding that a maximum of 17 skaters can be dressed for any game. The team, if it wishes, can dress a spare goaltender with the understanding that they should only play goalie that game. Select tryouts are open to all players and goalies who are age level appropriate. Players are not permitted to play outside of their age category. Selection is based on good behaviour and sportsmanship in addition to ability to play at this level, as these players are representing the NMHA in their travels. Standard Northumberland Minor Hockey Association Code of Conduct applies.
Select Team Fees
There is an incremental cost to play Select to each player of approximately $500-$1000.00. These costs are for your team jerseys (home and away) and socks, 3-4 exhibition games per month, officials, extra practices and up to 4 tournaments. Players will keep the jerseys and socks and may be reused the following season if they return to the select program. This year we are excited to add a Development portion to our select program which will be covered by the NMHA. All teams will follow an estimated budget that will be presented to the families when final team selections are made.
