Midget AA win in Pembroke; advance to Sarnia Final
With all the Silver Stick action in Cobourg and Port Hope last weekend, it’s easy to forget that several Northumberland Nighthawk teams have been competing in out of town Silver Stick tournaments. Last weekend, the Midget AA Nighthawks travelled to Pembroke to capture the Regional qualifier.

The Midget AA Nighthawks defeated the highly ranked Ottawa Sting 2-1 in an exciting fast paced final that featured end to end action and strong physical play from both teams. The previously undefeated Sting had handed the Nighthawks their only defeat of the weekend 3-1 during the round robin setting the stage for the final. Jarrod Desormeaux opened the scoring in the first with a shot from the high slot off the rush. Brayden Mcgregor and Jacob Keller assisted. Daymon Ferguson added to the Northumberland lead near the end of the second by roofing a rebound off the initial shot from Kavan Dobos. The game settled into a tight checking affair until 4:39 of the third period when the Sting took advantage of a defensive lapse to pull within one. But the Nighthawks, in front of a solid goal tending performance from Max Carlson, shutdown the Sting from there on in to capture the tournament crown.

The Midget AA Nighthawks, who have an overall record of 13-13-5, are hoping this victory will spark a stronger second half of the year where they have lost a number of close games and resulted in a less than satisfactory won/loss record, especially in league play. Head Coach Ray West said, “Our boys have had to adjust to the jump to the AA division as well as having a majority of first year players” in the double cohort midget division. “Most of the teams we compete against are predominately made up of second year players. That year makes a big difference at this age. “ The Coaches believe this victory marks an important turning point for the team. “The boys are learning what it takes to win close games and we are very optimistic the second half of the years” said West.

The Midget AA Nighthawks will travel to Sarnia January 15 – 17, 2016 to compete in the International Silver Stick Tournament.
